Summary of Boys Day in Brule 2001
July 3rd
BDiB 2001 began with the Registration Breakfast of Blueberry Pancakes and leftover Stanfest Pop tarts. This was a rather impromptu affair and discussion at the Winter Planning Committee Meeting (WPCM) will determine whether it is to be expanded upon next year. With the new millennium came new participants to BDiB. For the first time in the history of the event, registration was open to Boys outside of the family. The BDiB Board is withholding official comment on the experiment until after review during the WPCM, but it is safe to say that the general feeling towards the admission of outsiders is positive. However there is certain to be some discussion around the winning of the 2001 BDiB Cup by an outsider in this, the first "open" year. In all, 6 Boys registered and competed in BDiB 2001 with one participant withdrawing early.
Registered Boys, BDiB 2001:
Glenn Thompson, Portipique, (OS)
Mike Chapman, Pictou, (F)
Steve ____, Mount Pearl NF, (OS) *DNF*
Bert Thompson, Portipique, (OS)
Graham Betts, Westville, (F)
Skip Riley, Brule, (F)
The days events began with 9 holes of Golf at the
Sunrise Beach Golf Country Club.
The Boys were divided into two trios by Tee Tossing. Skip, Steve and Glenn went out first followed by Bert, MIke and Graham. Points were awarded for total score, for Best Drive (with the 3 best drives coming on the third hole), for Best Putt (even though there was no good putting all day) and for Closest to the Hole on the Ninth. The Boys were rewarded with the first Beer of the Day on the Fifth Hole.
After Golf, the Boys returned to BDiB headquarters for a Caveman Lunch of Chicken Thighs and Beer. This was heartily received by all. Several Boys suggested that we consider contracting the caterers to provide enough chicken next year for a serious Caveman Competition with points going to the Boy who eats the most.
The afternoon saw the Boys kayaking on the wild French River in equipment provided by Tide and Trails Rental. The Boys weren't long in learning how to use the Water Pumps for evil. There were many mid-river reentry demos, a hotly contested sprint and a few hardy souls took the first awkward steps towards an Eskimo Roll. Bonus points were assigned for a major fashion faux pas.
After returning the equipment and washing off some of the pungent French River sediment, the Boys headed to the Powerhouse for a real bath. The BDiB 2001 Adventure Swim location was greatly enjoyed by all for its cool, clear water, stiff current, spectacular cliffs and endless challenges. There were no points awarded during this stage, due to the inherent dangers of the Adventure Swim. This rule was strictly adhered to. In the future, the WPCM will consider the deduction of points for any unreasonably dangerous act. This rule may be necessary to protect the light -hearted nature of the event.
Returning from the Adventure Swim, the Boys were treated to a BBQ with cuts provided by the Pork Shop and a Queer Beer from Skip's fridge (much thanks to Rob and Shelley.) For dessert the Boys enjoyed Strawberries over Angel Food Cake. Bonus Points were assigned for a surprisingly loud manners faux pas. Again the cooks were warmly toasted for their success. At this point Steven resigned from further competition leaving only 5 Boys to finish out the Day.
A Ring Toss Round Robin was begun but abandoned due to Bugs.
Immediately after supper, came the first inaugural "1/2- hour songwriting contest". The boys split up into different corners of BDiB headquarters and created some wholey fresh and original material. This was an incredibly fruitful 1/2 hour with 4 submissions and one excuse proffered by the Boys. After auditioning the works it was decided to award no points, as no one felt qualified to select a winner from such high-quality pieces. A real treat for the Boys and Girls alike!
The last order of business included the computation of final scores and the awarding of any Special Bonus Points. Bonus Points were awarded for a Double Flush, an Ugly Bag, for being Polite, for Belching, and for a Backwards Toss. Points were also deducted.
To conclude the Day, prizes of Gatorade, tofu balogna, beef jerky and a Heineken Keg were awarded at the BDIB Beach Bonfire.
